As part of its distributed systems strategy, the company put AS/400s just about everywhere. Field offices, warehouses, and hundreds of dealerships were treated to this reliable little box.
When I moved into the project leadership role, I oversaw a capable staff who supported these systems. Tasks included operating system maintenance and troubleshooting.
The challenge was to produce self-installing tapes that would handle all of the versions of AS/400 objects without complaint.
Later, we experimented with a web-based report archival system that would reduce the need for AS/400s in many of the field offices.
